Just having a chat with the big boss man last night re-guarding tyres. Schumacher/sorex have the manoploy at the minute and they know it which shows in their price. I don't mind paying for quality but some of the rubbish there knocking out at the minute, isn't on (rubbish rims, moulding issues and carcase showing through on brand new sets). I personal would like to see a controlled tyre at the club, there's plenty out there for £15 per set or less (compared to £28 for sorex). Yes the new tyres wont have as much grip otherwise we'd be using them but everyone will have the same level of grip and save money in the process. You then have issues with one off drivers from different clubs but how many times does that happen? and those from other clubs that are regular drivers wont mind paying for a cheap set. It would be good to team up with SYR on the same controlled tyre as this would a win win situation. The purpose of this is to lower the running cost for drivers and to make for closer racing..........got to be worth a thought

I agree the price on these are ridiculous however none of us want to run with less grip than we already have, my suggestion would be to find an alternate tyre that will provide good grip if you want to go the control tyre route.
I also feel that drivers that dont come every meeting maybe put off by this unless we are using a tyre that they would already have (obviously something most clubs run) where as the current "any tyre rule" allows anyone to turn up and run what they have.
Just my opinion.

I think the best thing to do is to sort out the carpet. The lack of grip we have is due to the sand filled fire hose. We were on about this a while back the hoses need sealing better to keep the sand in, no sand on the carpet = better grip= cheaper tyres.

Personally I'd say the reason we have less grip at Donny is due to us running mini pins when we got it, to be honest I dont mind that it is lower grip than other places we race.
From the 2nd round onwards last night the grip was brilliant and couldnt complain.
I am a big fan of the hoses we have at Donny and they allow us to have nice curved areas of track, Ive been to alot of tracks and I would say Donnys hoses are just about the best way of laying a track out of anywhere Ive been.
Again this is just my opinion so....

It would be a good idea to bring a control tyre in along with Syr, even if it was to say everyone run 32's instead of 28's wouldn't be cheaper but they last longer

the 32 would indeed last longer, but are the same price as the 28 and use the same rev-lite plastic wheels which are crap. As the one who suggested using the hose as a track marker I to am a fan. I just think it is very important to seal them properly as the sand on the carpet act's like marble's

The best way round one off drivers coming to the club, is for the club to carry a few set's of the tyre's to rent out

I quite like the idea of an open tyre choice it adds another element that can be changed to suite an individuals driving style. If all the drivers were of a similar skill level it makes sense but we have such a wide range of skills the use of a control tyre may make some cars impossible to drive.

This is an interesting topic. Personally I haven't had any quality issues with jb 28s other than the rims being a bit crap. The price is getting silly and monopoly is never a good thing BUT a set of jb 28s can last for around 8-10 meetings - you can pretty much run them till they wear through. Compare that with tyres we used to run where the guy with a new set had a big advantage or the foams that chunked easily and they're not too bad.
32s are a good shout but a lot of drivers are switching anyway without inforcing it. The other problem with a less grippy control tyre is that while the A and B final guys can tweak the setup on their £300+ cars its not so easy for a beginner. The club has to cater for beginners and its difficult enough learning to drive these things when you have grip!
Don't get me wrong a cheap control tyre is appealing I just think finding the right one might be tricky.
