I have just got 10.5t brushless setup and it seems to be running quite hot. It currently has only got 15 degree of esc timing.
What is the best gear ratio for this speed motor? Will large spur and large pinion cause heat over a smaller spur and pinion with the same FDR?

Depends what speedo it is, and also what car you're running. You probably want to be running at about 7.6 fdr

Your always better using a large spur to small pinion setup, this is because the motor its under less strain. However using too much timing on this setup and the motor will rev like a good'en and just generate heat so you need a balance. I would agree with Scott and go between 7.6 and 8 fdr, turn the esc timing down as the motor will be punchy enough and make sure your drive chain its free.

thanks for the replies fellas. Ive got a 26 and 28 pinion ordered to go with my 90 spur. I'm running speed passion revention pro with Comp V3.0 motor in an old HPI Sprint. We will see how it goes friday hopefully less heat

Doesn't matter what gear ratio you have, the heat generator is your left thumb, nice and easy.....No point in full chapping when the car won't reach speed.......your motor wants to be between 70 to 80 degree when you finish a 5 min race, if your gear ratio is right and transmission is free, over 80 your giving it too much stick, under 70 not enough......:-)
